About My Granny
spacer

My grandmother was Mattie Calhoun. She raised me from the age of three. She was a wonderful woman of God. She was a prayer warrior as well. She worshipped at Reed's Chapel COGIC. She was always been a member of that church. She lived in Absanie all of her life. She met my grandfather during a state meeting.

My grandmother was a cook for many years at several restaurants in Absanie before she retired. After she retired, she made special order desserts for people in the area. She won several blue ribbons at state competitions for her desserts.

She was a great cook. She often had a house full of neighborhood children during lunchtime in the summer. She feed every child that was at the house, no matter how many children were at the house at any given time. One day, there were over 50 kids at the house. She feed all 50 kids, somehow. I still marvel when I think about that day. When everyone had left, she looked at me and said; "Now, I know how Jesus felt when He feed the multitude." She smiled and started singing as she went to clean up the kitchen. That's all she said about the incident. She didn't fuse about how many kids were at the house or how many dishes they had messed up; she just cleaned up the mess. That was my grandmother for you.

She was always praying for someone in the neighborhood. One day, this small child had gotten run over by a car and had died immediately. Someone from the neighborhood came and got my grandmother. My grandmother prayed the child back to life right in the middle of the street before the ambulance got to the scene. The ambulance was a little slow getting to the scene. My grandmother told everyone, "The ambulance wasn't late.  God was on time. The ambulance got here when it was supposed to. After Dr. Jesus had finished on the case." That day in the middle of the street, three people got saved. My grandmother prayed with all three of them and talked to them right then and there. She took them by the pastor's house that day so they could join the church. The pastor didn't even say a word. He just prayed with them and told them to come back to church on the next night. That was my grandmother for you.

I loved to pray with my grandmother. She prayed so melodically, that I know most of the angels in Heaven would stop what they were doing to listen to her pray. Sometimes she would let me pray with her. When she had something serious to pray about she would tell me, "Granny's Angel can't pray with me today. Baby, today Granny needs to have a serious talk with the Lord." With that phrase, she would go into her private prayer room and call down fire from Heaven. That was my grandmother for you.
