I called my grandfather, Hampton Calhoun, Pappop. He says that I started calling him when I was two years old. He always popped his knee instead of clapping his hands in church.
My grandfather is a carpenter by trade. He is a very good carpenter. He learned his craft when he was 10 years old by watching his father who was also a skilled carpenter.
He is part owner of a carpentry shop in the city of Absanie. He has been an owner of the shop for over 20 years. He first worked at the shop. When one of the previous owners died, my grandfather received part ownership in the shop as an inheritance. The shop is a very popular shop in the city of Absanie. My grandfather specializes in making shelves, bookcases, desks, and bed frames. He designed and made a desk for a former mayor of Absanie. He crafted most of the furniture in our house.
He showed me how to make some furniture. I made my own bookshelves for my room. I also made an entertainment shelf for my room. My grandfather took Henry Lacey of the Lacey Family and made him an apprentice. Henry became my grandfather's apprentice at the age of 8. He helps my grandfather at the shop.
My grandfather served as a trustee and a deacon at Reed's Chapel COGIC in Absanie. He is retired from church service.
